Most people find it useful to weigh the options of decking materials before they come to visit. Below is some information that can help you start your project.
In the great PNW Cedar is traditionally the most used species for decking. It is naturally resistant to rot and insects making it very resilient in our climates. Fir is often used as an economical choice, however is not as resilient as Cedar. Exotic hardwoods such as Batu, and Ipe undeniably make the most stunning natural wood decks, but carry the largest investment. Other specialty woods including Redwood and Tigerwood are available with our Ready-to-Order program.
Regardless of species, wood decks require maintenance, such as staining or painting, every 2-3 years. Proper maintenance only extends the life of your wood deck before needing to be replaced. A well maintained Redwood deck often lasts 15-20 years, Fir 10-15 years, while some hardwoods can last well over 70 years.

Composite decking entered the scene in the 1990s but has skyrocketed in popularity in the last few years. Moscow & Pullman Building Supply has scoured the industry to ensure we offer the best available and have found Fiberon has established themselves as the best in the market. The general appeal of composite decking is the absolute low maintenance it requires.
Beyond general seasonal cleaning there is no other maintenance needed for composite decking. This convenience can come at an elevated cost, however, depending on which color or style of Fiberon you select. The investment pays for itself in time and product saved maintaining the deck. In today’s market composite decking can be just as affordable, if not more, as a traditional wood deck! If you have any further questions about your new composite deck please come in to either location and speak to our deck professionals today.
